Willie has been chasing birds since childhood, long before the vines came into it. Twenty years in the wine trade followed: co-founding a distribution company, working as an importer, running a restaurant floor, training as a sommelier. That background didn't replace the birding. It just gave him a second fluency, in the same hills.
A morning or afternoon with Willie moves through more than a species list. It's oak woodland ecology, the vineyard's own natural history, the creeks that cut these hillsides long before anyone planted a row of Cabernet, and the birds that have never once cared about a harvest calendar.

Tours run whenever the light and your schedule allow. Dawn is excellent. So is a quiet hour after lunch, or the low gold light before dinner reservations. The birds don't keep office hours, and neither does this business.

You don't have to already be a birder.
Most guests aren't. Some have never held binoculars before. The pace, the explanations, and the route all adjust to whoever shows up, whether that's a curious first-timer or someone chasing a very specific species for a life list.
Corporate & Groups
Corporate outings, team offsites & large groups.
A naturalist-guided walk works surprisingly well as a corporate team building activity across Napa Valley and Sonoma County, low physical barrier to entry, genuinely engaging for people who've done every trust-fall and ropes course already, and it photographs beautifully for the internal recap email. Also a strong fit for bachelorette and bachelor party weekends, wedding welcome groups, and hospitality partners hosting larger parties in Napa, Sonoma, or Healdsburg.
How it's priced. Multi-guide birding and nature walks for groups up to 30 guests, quoted as a flat rate to the company or group, not per person. Additional guides are brought on as the party size grows, so pacing and attention stay the same regardless of headcount.
What it looks like. Groups are typically split into smaller walking parties of 6 to 10 with their own guide, moving through the same property on staggered routes, then regrouping for a shared debrief or breakfast at the end.
Good fits. Company offsites and team retreats, bachelorette and bachelor party weekends looking for a genuinely fun morning before the wine starts, wedding welcome parties and rehearsal weekends, hotel and winery hospitality programs, conference add-ons, and multi-generational family gatherings.
Good to Know
What to expect in the field.
Meeting point. You'll meet Willie directly at the trailhead, vineyard entrance, or agreed location. No pickup or transport is included in the tour itself, if travel logistics are a concern, mention it when you book.
Have your own property? If you're hosting on a private estate, vineyard, or a home with real acreage, Willie's happy to guide right there instead of a public trail, within reason. Mention it when you inquire and he'll let you know if the property's a good fit.
Gear. Binoculars are provided for every guest at no extra cost. Feel free to bring your own if you have a favorite pair.
Pace and terrain. Walking pace, mostly flat to gently rolling trails and vineyard rows. Let Willie know ahead of time about any mobility needs, stroller access, or physical accommodations, and the route will be planned around it.
Weather. Tours run rain or shine within reason. In the case of genuinely unsafe conditions, Willie will reach out to reschedule at no charge.

These are some of Willie's favorites, the ground he walks regularly, knows the seasonal patterns of, and can put a name to nearly everything moving through. Open to intermediate Napa spots too, and beyond Napa, Willie also guides in Sonoma County and around Healdsburg, just ask.
Bothe-Napa Valley State Park
Redwoods, Douglas-fir, and Ritchey Creek, one of the most reliable spots in the county for year-round variety.
Oat Hill Mine Trail
Ridge views and chaparral, the trail Big Willie's first co-guided tour ran on.
Alston Park
Open grassland and oak woodland just west of the city, an easy, reliable morning walk.
Tolay Lake Regional Park
Lake and grassland habitat drawing waterfowl and raptors most other Napa stops don't offer, on the Sonoma County side.

Red-shouldered Hawk
Buteo lineatusYear-round in the oak woodland and along the creeks, calling constantly. Most people never learn to place the sound until someone points it out.
Anna's Hummingbird
Calypte annaHere every month of the year. The males climb a hundred feet and dive, and the sound at the bottom of that dive is not made by the voice.
Nuttall's Woodpecker
Dryobates nuttalliiFound almost nowhere outside California. Works an oak trunk at eye level while most people walk right past it without a glance.
California Quail
Callipepla californicaThe state bird, and the easiest to fall in love with. Moves through vineyard rows in tight family coveys, topknot bobbing with every step.
White-throated Swift
Aeronautes saxatalisThe fastest level flier in North America, cutting along the ridgelines in pairs. Blink and you'll need Willie to tell you what you just saw.
Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodiasStanding motionless at the creek's edge until the exact right moment. A study in patience worth borrowing for the rest of the walk.

Fall migration is quietly the best season to book. Raptors are moving through the ridgelines, songbird numbers swell before they push further south, and the valley empties of festival crowds just as the birding gets loudest. September through November is the window most guides quietly favor and rarely advertise.

Do you provide transportation or pickup?
Not as part of the standard tour. Guests meet Willie directly at the trailhead or tour location. If you need help coordinating transport from a hotel or winery, mention it when you inquire and it can sometimes be arranged separately.
Do I need my own binoculars?
No. A set of binoculars comes with every tour at no extra charge. If you have a pair you already love using, bring them.
Is this suitable for kids, or for people who've never birded before?
Yes to both. Tours are private to your party, so the pace and depth adjust to whoever's along, whether that's a curious eight-year-old or a lifelong lister chasing one specific bird.
What's the cancellation policy?
Full details are confirmed at booking. In general, advance notice gets a full refund or an easy reschedule, weather-related cancellations are always rescheduled at no charge.
Can you accommodate mobility limitations or other accessibility needs?
Yes. Let Willie know when you inquire, and the route, pace, and terrain will be planned specifically around it. Most tour locations offer flatter, more accessible alternatives to the standard trail.
Do you run tours for wineries or corporate groups?
Yes, this is a growing part of the business. Wineries and hospitality properties can offer guided birding as a guest experience add-on, priced as a flat fee to the property. Reach out through the contact form for details.
